Whettleton

Description

Nestling in 2000 acres of lovely grounds amidst Shropshire's beautiful rolling countryside, these handsome properties share use of a superb indoor heated swimming pool, a tennis court and a small gymnasium. Built in 1840 from the mellow local stone, and grouped around a fine courtyard, the four cottages are sympathetic barn conversions, retaining a wealth of original features in their carefully furnished interiors, whilst The Park is a luxuriously appointed and very spacious modern stone barn, faithfully built in traditional style, and boasting captivating rural views.

Wonderful walks start from the door through the owners' 2000 acre estate or further afield in the historic Border country. Ludlow famous for its gourmet reastaurants, annual festival, magnificent castle ruins and parish church as well as its many interesting shops and pubs, is just 5 miles away.

Stokesay Castle and the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre are 2 miles and historic Shrewsbury and the Ironbridge Gorge Museum are easily accessible. Fishing, golf and National Hunt racing are all under 5 miles. Shops and pubs serving food ½ mile.

Reviews

Good place for an active family with both swimming and tennis onsite. Although there were others on the complex we were barely aware of them. Plenty of places around to visit and beautiful countryside.

A great place, and the children loved the swimming pool, especially having it to ourselves which was great! The fridge was packed with milk, eggs, butter and bread and teabags - this was really helpful.

Peaceful, uncrowded and still largely devoted to farming, this is one of England’s most unspoilt counties, as you’ll discover during a break in one of our holiday cottages in Shropshire. Take a walk on the Long Mynd a dramatic ridge which stands high over the landscape, then pop in to the small village of Church Stretton which nestles in the valley below for a hearty tea.

The county town of Shrewsbury sits on a hill almost completely surrounded by a loop in the river Severn. Here you’ll find Elizabethan timber-framed buildings and handsome Georgian terraces. Shropshire even has its own centre of gastronomy in the charming town of Ludlow, which boasts a number of Michelin starred restaurants as well as a profusion of specialist food shops. The splendid Norman castle at Ludlow is also well worth a visit, as is nearby Stokesay Castle, both within a short drive of our holiday cottages in Shropshire.

Seeing Shropshire today it’s hard to believe it was actually the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. You can see where it all started at Ironbridge Gorge. Don’t miss Blists Hill, which recreates life at the turn of the twentieth century.
